After watching my daughter train for karate, I noticed that the athletes really enjoyed the “reaction game” where they went head to head to strike at the kick paddle first. Gamifying reflexes was great, but required attention by the Sensei and the feedback was not consistent. This felt like a place for a completely over-engineered solution, so I went about making custom kick paddles with embedded sensors and LEDs connected to a controller to remove the uncertainty and Sensei from the loop. As an added benefit the athletes could practice their reactions at any time and use it as a fun game during breaks.

Paddles connected to the controller
LEDs light up to start the timing
Paddle on the left was hit first and is the winner!
